ANE ARRASTOA AND IZARO ARROITA IN “GARA”

Last Saturday, 15th March, the newspaper Gara published in the supplement ‘Gaur8’ a report on the project ‘The Art of Memory and the Memory of Art in Education’ of the Education subgroup of the MHLI research group.

Issue 919 of ‘Gaur8’ has received Ane Arrastoa and Izaro Arroita, members of MHLI, to talk about the project ‘The Art of Memory and the Memory of Art in Education’. The report has been made on the occasion of the exhibition Memoria Hezkuntzan. Errenteriako Herri Arte Eskolako esperientzia, held at Xenpelar Etxea. In the report, together with the explanation of the details of their didactic proposal, they have shared the experience of the pilot project carried out in the School of Art of Errenteria.  

Arrastoa and Arroita have highlighted the need to work on the memory and conflicts in Euskal Herria in primary school, establishing art as the epicentre. They explain briefly and clearly how to make this possible: ‘We propose to approach the conflict with the different margins that a conflict has and with the different perspectives that arise in a conflict. Then we propose the reading of a work of children’s and young people’s literature, but we do a discontinuous reading, working on different inter-artistic experiences. At the end we also work on collective creation to build something collective out of those things that a conflict dwarfs; through art we approach these conflictive historical and political realities from our affections, from historical empathy, creativity and experimentation’ (Mateo, 2025).

They also announced the exhibition of the education subgroup in the Auditorium of Vitoria-Gasteiz of the UPV/EHU and the didactic unit that will be published with the publishing house Erein.
